What is tartar?

Tartar is dental plaque that has not been removed well enough during brushing. We often see that tartar builds up between the teeth and behind the front teeth. Unlike plaque, tartar itself is difficult to remove.

How exactly does tartar form?

To understand how tartar forms, it is important to first know how plaque forms. Plaque is created by the bacteria that hide in our mouth. By brushing twice a day, preferably with an electric toothbrush, you remove the majority of these bacteria. Unfortunately, it is often not possible to keep the space between the teeth properly clean with a toothbrush alone. For this, we often recommend using interdental brushes, dental sticks and dental floss.

Consequences of tartar

A little tartar is often not a problem. The dentist or dental hygienist removes it during the routine check-up. Do you not have your tartar removed regularly? Then you run the risk of unpleasant oral complaints, such as gingivitis or periodontitis.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the term we use for mildly inflamed gums. At this stage, the inflammation can still be tackled well by brushing your teeth twice a day and cleaning the space between your teeth and molars properly, for example with a dental stick.

Parodontitis

Do you notice too late that your gums are inflamed, or do you not take action quickly enough? Then there is a chance that the gingivitis will develop into periodontitis. With periodontitis, the inflammation has spread to the jawbone, causing the gums to come away from the teeth and molars. In the space that is created, more bacteria then build up again, which makes the inflammation worse.

Signs of inflamed gums

Inflamed gums are characterised by complaints such as bleeding gums during brushing, an unpleasant taste in the mouth or bad breath. In most cases, however, you will not recognise gum inflammation yourself. This is because gum inflammation almost never causes pain. That is why it is very important to have your teeth checked by the dentist every six months. The dentist notices the inflammation in time, so that we prevent more serious problems.

Having tartar removed

Unfortunately, you cannot remove tartar yourself, because it has become too hard for that. Do you often have a lot of tartar? Then we recommend visiting the dental hygienist for a professional dental cleaning. We then remove the tartar precisely using a device that works with vibrations.

Preventing tartar in the future

Prevention is, of course, better than cure. To prevent stubborn tartar, we recommend brushing your teeth twice a day, preferably with an electric toothbrush. We also advise keeping the space between your teeth properly clean with interdental brushes, dental sticks or dental floss.
